Police bodycam footage showed Iain Ashmore, 45, insisting officers were unfairly targeting him before they checked his driving record and discovered he had racked up an astonishing 59 penalty points. Ashmore had been stopped while driving a white Ford Transit Connect on July 23 despite being banned from the road. Before officers checked his details, Ashmore complained he was “fed up of being pulled over” and claimed police were picking on him after stopping him “three times in one month”. He even threatened to make a formal complaint. PC Mark Solder then looked up his driving record and told him: “It says you’ve got 59 points at the minute.” Ashmore replied: “Oh has it gone down now has it?” In which the puzzled PC Solder responded: “Down?” Ashmore then quipped: “My mistake it was 61.” Drivers who accumulate 12 penalty points within a three-year period are normally banned from the road for at least six months under the UK's 'totting up' system. When asked how he had managed to keep his licence with 61 points, Ashmore laughed and replied: “Because I’m a very good person.” Ashmore also admitted his insurance costs were “astronomical”, but shrugged them off as “just a pretty penny”, insisting they were still cheaper than insurance for lorry drivers. Lincoln Magistrates’ Court heard Ashmore, of Witham St Hughes, Lincolnshire, drove the white Ford Transit Connect while disqualified on May 30, June 23 and July 23 this year. He admitted three offences of driving while disqualified, three offences of driving without insurance and one offence of driving while using a mobile phone. Last month he was handed an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving until July 2027 and ordered to pay court costs and a surcharge. PC Solder, of Lincolnshire Police, said: “This man continued to drive despite being banned from doing so; he is now disqualified until July 2027. He has 59 points on his driving licence. “Driving is a privilege but does comes with responsibilities and costs that the vast majority of road users understand they must meet. He is a risk on the roads and a menace to other lawful drivers."
