The bus collided head-on with a camper van and two cars on the Terni-Rieti road, near the border between the Umbria and Lazio regions, on Sunday evening, Umbria regional authorities said. Regional president Stefania Proietti said six of the 34 people injured were in critical condition, while two others were being treated for serious injuries, according to Italian news agency ANSA. The shuttle bus was transporting tourists to the Marmore Falls, an ancient Roman waterfall near Terni, Proietti said. She described the crash as a "catastrophic" mass-casualty incident, saying the regional emergency protocol was activated immediately after the first emergency call. The injured were rushed to hospitals in Terni, Perugia, Spoleto, Foligno and Rieti. Two of those killed on board the bus have been identified as Italians from the Tuscan town of Massa. Francesco Persiani, the mayor of Massa, expressed his condolences, writing on Facebook: "In the very serious road accident that occurred along the Terni–Rieti highway, two of our fellow citizens, Paolo Cosci and Graziella Baldini, also lost their lives. It is a deep sorrow that affects our entire community."
