The story of Terrion Arnold's fall from grace is still being written as the former NFL first round draft pick awaits an arraignment later this month on a handful of first-degree felony charges that carry with them the possibility of life imprisonment.
The newest part of the Arnold story is how the Detroit Lions, who drafted the cornerback in 2024 and were expecting him to mature from their secondary's most promising player to its star, are still lamenting everything that has transpired.
"Listen, I'm not going to say it was a setback, so to say, because to me, honestly, that's disrespectful to the guys that's still in this locker room," Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard told reporters on Sunday.
"What I'll say is Terrion Arnold had number one cornerback potential, but it was still untapped. You know what I mean? And I'll kind of leave that at that."
Arnold turned himself in to authorities at the Hillsborough County Jail in Tampa on June 24, 2025, after prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a retaliatory attack stemming from a theft of cash and luxury items from a Florida Airbnb he had rented.
He has been charged with four counts of armed robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon and four counts of kidnapping. Arnold's legal representation has denied the allegations but that didn't stop the Lions from releasing Arnold on the day of his first court appearance.
Arnold's next scheduled court appearance is an Aug. 13 arraignment where he is expected to enter a formal plea in a case that possibly makes him the latest addition to a list of supremely talented NFL players who derailed promising careers by doing stupid stuff.
Criminal stuff.
This group of men did stuff that hurt others to often terrible degrees but also wrecked themselves and their careers.
That list includes Aldon Smith, Josh Gordon, Lawrence Phillips, Justin Blackmon, Rae Carruth, Henry Ruggs III, Ray Rice, Aaron Hernandez, Donte Stallworth and others.

This is by no means a complete list but all of them are cautionary tales of how men with elite athletic talent forfeited their futures because of drugs, alcohol, or violence that included domestic abuse and even murder.

Arnold, guilty or not, seems to be on a similar path now. He already is losing the 2026 season, which was supposed to be his third in the league, barring a dramatic change of circumstances.
And while the Lions try to fill the void on their roster, Arnold is in danger of joining a different and very upsetting list of NFL players.
