Confusion Over India NSE Closing Auction Turbocharges Nifty Rally Good morning... I’m Alex Gabriel Simon in Mumbai, with your markets need-to-know for the day. Asian stocks are trading lower early on Tuesday as doubts about the artificial intelligence trade resurface after a volatile month. At home, the Nifty appears to have given a breakout signal, closing at its highest level in five months on Monday. That said, the rally was partly fueled by the confusion over NSE’s newly introduced mechanism to determine closing prices (more on that below). Against this backdrop, traders expect today’s session to be volatile because of the weekly expiry in Nifty contracts. Meanwhile, a pickup in foreign inflows and the recent retreat in oil prices have helped boost sentiment. Indian equities deserve a core place in long-term global portfolios, as the market offers diversification benefits that few large economies can match, State Street Investment Management said in a report. While some optimism has returned to the cash market, volumes in the derivatives space have taken a hit as we write below. Meanwhile, ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s rate decision on Wednesday, farm ministry data showed that plantings of rice, corn, and pulses trailed last year’s pace as of July 31. That could influence the central bank’s inflation outlook, given that food accounts for over a third of the consumer price index. In other news, the Indian government is looking to sell at least a 2.5% stake in Life Insurance Corp. as part of its plan to meet the minimum public float rules. The offer, with an option to offload an additional 4% in the nation’s largest life insurer, opens on Tuesday. In today’s newsletter, we write about:
