Met Office names 6 areas facing hail and lightning in new warning – full list The Met Office has extended its weather warning for thunderstorms, which will now last until 9pm today - it covers Northern Ireland, where power cuts and lightning are on the cards The Met Office has issued an extended weather warning for thunderstorms. The yellow level warning for Northern Ireland was due to come into force at midday. It has now been brought forward and will last from 9.15am until 9pm. The warning says those in the impacted regions could see floods, lightning and hail today. As much as 30mm of rain could fall over the course of just two hours, according to the national weather agency. The Met Office says some flooding to homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus" "Delays to train services are possible," the Met Office adds, while lightning strikes could damage buildings. Power cuts are also on the cards. People should also get themselves ready for power cuts. The Met Office says: "People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items." And for lightning strikes, it adds: "If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground." This is a Breaking News story.
