Woman charged with murder after death of 'malnourished' non-verbal man

A south Brisbane woman has been charged over the death of a non-verbal man who police said was "malnourished". Isaac Oar, also known as 'Ike', was found unresponsive at an address in Ayr in North Queensland on August 10, 2023, in what first responders described as a "confronting" situation. The 56-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Oar had Down Syndrome and was a recipient of the National Insurance Disability Scheme (NDIS). Police said they conducted a "complex" investigation into Mr Oar's death, finding he was experiencing serious malnourishment and weighed just 29kg at the time of his death. At the time, Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said Mr Oar hadn't received any professional medical treatment in well over a decade. "He was only 29 kilos — that doesn't happen overnight," he said. "There has obviously been years of neglect in some format." Police said they had investigated his health, care and treatment throughout his life. On Tuesday, detectives from the Crime Command Homicide Investigation Unit and Ayr Criminal Investigation Branch arrested a 70-year-old woman from Forest Lake and charged her with one count of murder (domestic violence). She is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
