‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ becomes second fastest film in history to cross $1 billion box office milestone

The new Spider-Man film, Tom Holland's fourth solo adventure, surpassed 'Avengers: Endgame' for its opening box office weekend and has now become the second fastest film in history to cross the $1 billion mark. It’s finally happened, after just six days. The new Spider-Man adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the second fastest movie to reach that milestone after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Endgame captured a record breaking $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend. Sony and Marvel’s latest Spidey film, starring Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero, has defied all box office expectations, which bodes well for the MCU's upcoming Avengers: Doomsday - a culmination of multiple superhero story arcs which is seen as a make-or-break moment for the studio considering Marvel's under-performing and critically shrugged movies in the last five years. The success of Brand New Day is down to several factors: euphoric word-of-mouth; positive reviews; a more grounded and character-based adventure which doesn't require any prior multiverse homework; and the draw of married couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, who are fast becoming the most profitable box office stars currently working. Both actors are having one hell of a summer, starring in both The Odyssey and Brand New Day. Between them, they currently have a reported box office total of $1.8bn with both films – a figure which should continue to grow when The Odyssey is released in South Korea today, as well as China (14 August) and Japan (11 September). In December, Zendaya will star in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three – which, based on the first two instalments, could make around $800m at the global box office. And there’s still the outside chance that the couple could appear in December’s Doomsday... For the time being, Brand New Day is the fourth movie of 2026 to earn $1 billion, following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.012 billion), Michael ($1.016 billion) and Toy Story 5 ($1.068 billion). The Odyssey has grossed $912 million to date and is about to be the fifth release of 2026 to join the billion-dollar club. It's very likely that Brand New Day will surpass them all to climb to $2 billion, a metric that only seven other movies have ever achieved.
