Gavin Newsom has delivered a damning verdict on President Donald Trump’s latest trip to the Golden State, calling it “very low energy.” “Trump’s visit to California was a total snoozer,” the Democrat posted on his press office account on X. “Very low energy. No speech. He could barely take a question on the tarmac.” He was responding to a clip of Trump turning away from reporters on the runway at Los Angeles International Airport and trudging back towards the steps of Air Force One, batting away a question about beleaguered Ohio Republican Rep. Max Miller. In a further comment on his personal account, he added: “Trump talks tough from inside his Truth Social bubble, but suddenly has nothing to say when he’s actually in California. “While the president uses L.A. to raise campaign cash, survivors of last year’s firestorms are waiting for him to finally deliver federal relief to recover.” The president flew west on Tuesday to headline a Republican National Committee fundraiser at his Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, also taking part in a roundtable event and giving an interview to Fox News reporter Trace Gallagher before moving on to Las Vegas, Nevada. Trump did not meet with Newsom nor deliver a speech on his first visit to the state since January 2025, when he sparred with the governor after arriving to survey the destruction wrought by the Palisades Fire. The president and the governor again clashed the following June after Trump sent federal immigration troops into downtown Los Angeles to round-up people accused of being in the country illegally, sparking protests and prompting him to send in the Marines and National Guard against Newsom’s wishes. Ahead of the president’s return trip this week, the governor attacked him on social media over the minimum wage, saying that California was raising it to $17.40 an hour from next year, which he pointed out was more than double the federal level. “Donald Trump and the GOP are still defending a $7.25 minimum wage while workers scrape by,” he added. “Pitiful.” Retaliating, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales briefed that Trump would use his appearance in front of the RNC to deride Newsom’s policies, accusing the governor of raising taxes, allowing fraud in taxpayer-funded programs and protecting dangerous undocumented immigrants. Following the president’s departure, the governor responded to a post from Wales saying as much, with the comment: “We’re old enough to remember when the White House fed The New York Post a quote saying Trump would ‘target’ the governor during his trip yesterday to Los Angeles – instead silence.” He cited three conservative sources who had repeated Wales’s line and said they “got played like fools” and had been “used and discarded” by the White House. The governor has made waves over the last year by regularly spoofing Trump online, parodying his idiosyncratic posting style and firing out memes and videos ridiculing his public performances, moving many to tip him as a possible Democratic presidential nominee come 2028. In another post reacting to the president’s passing visit, he wrote: “California’s win rate against the Trump administration in court is 83 percent.” He has since gone after the president for claiming during a speech at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas Wednesday that his tariffs program had “made us rich.” “Us = billionaires and big corporations,” Newsom qualified.
