Rep. Thomas Massie, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Joe Kent, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, among others who have broken with Trump over the war in Iran, met at Carlson’s home in Maine to discuss a new political movement. The gathering was shared on a social media after it happened. “We said no more foreign wars and we meant it and supported Donald Trump because he made that promise,” Greene wrote, sharing a photo of the group on X. “But he’s betrayed us all. Our commitment is America First for all Americans, right, left, and center.” “The movement has begun,” she added. Kent, who resigned in March over his opposition to the conflict in the Middle East, said the group met to try and strategize and see if they could form a coalition that would make a new political party possible - and already have a candidate in mind. It was not immediately clear who might lead the fledgling movement, but Kent noted every attendee at the Maine meeting has tried to convince Carlson to run for president. “All of us at one point in time told Tucker he needs to run, and Tucker’s been pretty public that he’s not going to run,” Kent said on Wednesday’s episode of the talkshow, The Young Turks. “So we all made our pitch to Tucker as to why he should run, and hopefully he wakes up one day and says he’s gonna run. I would fully support that.” Kent noted the difficulties they might face, telling host Cenk Uygur, “Running as a third-party candidate is challenging. Not impossible, but it is very challenging. But that’s kind of the consensus that we came to, that the current system just simply doesn’t work, and we have to find something new to save our country.” Greene, Massie, Kent and Carlson all backed Trump ahead of the 2024 election, but each broke with the president over issues including the war in the Middle East and the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files. They have also expressed disappointment that Trump seemingly turned on his campaign promise to end “forever wars,” by launching the Iran conflict in February. Meanwhile, Trump has unleashed harsh attacks on his former MAGA allies, calling Greene a “traitor,” Kent a “SLEAZEBAG,” Carlson a “Low IQ person” and Massie “Weak and Pathetic.” While most Americans oppose the war with Iran, history suggests that a third party would face steep odds of success. No third-party candidate has won the presidency in the modern era, and only a small number of lawmakers in Congress are not aligned with either major party. Kent noted that the group’s potential third-party would have a “simple” platform focused on anti-interventionism. “I think it is having a very, very simple platform, and it’s acknowledging upfront, like, we are going to disagree on a lot of domestic policy and a lot of social issues,” he said. “At the end of the day, the president can talk a lot about all those things, but he doesn’t really have a lot of power.” “We do agree that we don’t want Israel dictating our foreign policy,” he added. “We don’t want any more foreign wars.” Carlson shared the image of the group on X Tuesday, writing, “MAGA was betrayed. We all were. It’s time for a new path forward.” However, the former Fox host didn’t mention his involvement in the potential party during his show Wednesday.
