Man killed in suspected dog attack may have been an intruder, police say

Police are investigating after a 23-year-old man died in a suspected dog attack in Sydney's south-west. The man was not a resident at the property where the suspected mauling took place, with a key line of inquiry being whether he was an intruder. A number of dogs have since been seized from the property. Police are investigating whether a man suspected of being mauled to death by dogs at a property in Sydney's south-west was an intruder. The body of a 23-year-old man was found at a rural property on Badgally Road at Eschol Park near Campbelltown, about 12am on Wednesday. He was found with significant injuries which appeared to be the result of a dog attack. "Initial inquiries indicate the man may have been attacked by animals prior to his death," police said earlier on Friday. The circumstances behind why the male was at the property remained unclear to detectives and was under investigation, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said. "It's a terrible set of circumstances," Commissioner Lanyon said. "He certainly doesn't appear to be a resident of that location." Commissioner Lanyon said a "very key line of inquiry" would be whether the dead man was an intruder. "We need to understand why that male was at the location," he said. Dogs seized from property Police and Campbelltown City Council officers attended the scene on Friday. Vision showed a number of dogs being removed from the property in a series of vans and being taken to a council animal care facility. A spokesperson for Campbelltown City Council said it was assisting police with its investigation. "Council is supporting police inquiries and will continue to assist as required, in accordance with its legislative responsibilities, including determining the registration and ownership status of the dogs," the spokesperson said. The suspected attack happened at Saturn's Rings property, which features conjoined circular buildings based on the rings of the planet and comprised three concentric units. According to a Campbelltown City Library blog, it was built by a Polish immigrant Stefan Dzwonnik in the late 1970s and into the 80s and features "one of the most spectacular in New South Wales with a limitless, panoramic view of the surrounding countryside" but was never completed. It was designed to be the centre point of a worldwide movement directed toward a better life on Earth, the blog said, with the largest top level being the family living quarters and the two lower levels "for the society". It is unclear if anyone was living at the property at the time of the incident. A crime scene has since been established, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
