UK to Tighten Land Rules Used by Aldi and Lidl to Avoid Rivals
Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl should no longer be able to block rivals from opening stores near their sites in the UK, the antitrust regulator said as it seeks to level the playing field for the country’s grocers.
The Competition and Markets Authority said in a provisional ruling Friday that Aldi and Lidl, which have expanded rapidly since arriving in the UK in the 1990s, would be subject to the same land rules as competitors including Tesco Plc and J Sainsbury Plc. The regulator’s final decision is due in October.
