Officers were called shortly after the one-year-old died in hospital on August 23, 2023, the Liverpool Echo reports. Merseyside Police said a Home Office post-mortem examination concluded the cause of death was ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition. The force said a second child had been found to be "neglected and under-developed". Smith, of Holly Bank Street, and Johnson, of Hempstead Close, have also been charged with child neglect and possession of a controlled class B drug, cannabis. The pair are due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Thursday, August 13.
