Man jailed after spending three weeks in hotel without paying - his final bill was massive A hotel stay that appeared to be an ordinary festive break has ended with a costly legal consequence for one guest after an unexpected discovery A man has been jailed after his hotel stay, that stretched through Christmas and into the New Year, ended with an unpaid bill running into thousands of euros. The guest had been staying at an accommodation in Spain when he eventually left without settling what he owed. The circumstances surrounding the stay have now resulted in a court ruling against him. The 54-year-old was sentenced to one year behind bars by the Provincial Court of Castellón after being found guilty of aggravated fraud, according to Diario De Sevilla. The case concerned his stay at Hotel L'Ermita Casa Ripo in La Vall d'Alba, near the Hermitage of San Cristóbal. He arrived at the hotel on December 22, 2023, and stayed on a full-board basis before leaving on January 15, 2024. During his time there, he received accommodation, meals and cleaning services. The total cost came to €2,283.40. According to the judicial ruling, the man secured the stay by "projecting an appearance of solvency" despite being "aware from the outset that he would not pay for any of the expenses incurred." The court found that his conduct amounted to aggravated fraud, with his previous criminal record playing a significant role in the decision. The man had five previous final convictions for fraud offences. They included convictions handed down by courts in Barcelona, Salamanca, Tortosa and Santiago de Compostela between 2018 and 2024. The offences were considered particularly significant because they were of the same nature as the latest case. The court determined that his repeated offending demonstrated a pattern in which he gave the impression he had the means to pay before obtaining services without settling the resulting bills. Proceedings eventually concluded on June 11, 2026, when an indictment reflecting an agreement between the defendant and his defence counsel was presented. He admitted the facts and accepted the sentence. Alongside the year-long prison term, the court imposed a €1,080 fine, payable at a rate of €6 per day over six months. The ruling also states that failure to pay the fine could result in one day of deprivation of liberty for every two unpaid instalments. The defendant has additionally been ordered to compensate Sociedad L'Ermita Casa Ripo S.L., the company behind the hotel, for the €2,283.40 outstanding from his stay. Statutory interest will also be added to the sum, while he has been ordered to cover the legal costs. The ruling, numbered 244/2026, was handed down by the First Section of the Provincial Court of Castellón. It is now final and cannot be appealed by either party.
