Raiders sit Cousins, Crosby day after scuffle

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Maxx Crosby were held out of practice on Saturday for disciplinary reasons, stemming from their fight on Friday. As a result, top pick Fernando Mendoza played with the first-team offense. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said both players will practice Monday. The team is off Sunday. "We have very clear expectations on how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business, and we violated that yesterday, so [we] held those guys out," Kubiak said. "That's all I'm going to say about it. We addressed it with the team, and we're moving on." Cousins and Crosby stretched with the team and participated in individual drills. But they remained on the sideline during the 11-on-11 period. Cousins and Crosby got into a heated altercation on Friday. The All-Pro edge rusher hit Cousins twice during the team period. When Crosby hit Cousins' arm a second time, the 15-year veteran had had enough. Cousins got into Crosby's face, grabbing the All-Pro's jersey, while both exchanged words before it was broken up. Both players continued to practice following the scuffle. Kubiak addressed the incident, saying it's a byproduct of camp, but he wants the team's two leaders to be smarter with their emotions. Defensive tackle Jonah Laulu and guard Caleb Rogers got into a fight on Friday, as well. However, both players participated in practice on Saturday. Mendoza had a solid morning while playing with the starters. He had a few off-target throws and had issues with the snap a couple of times. But he responded well. He threw a pair of touchdowns to Tre Tucker and Brock Bowers during the red zone period. During the two-minute period to wrap up practice, Mendoza completed five straight passes to set up a field goal. "We want to get [Mendoza] to be even better, but we're pleased with where [he's] at right now," quarterback coach Mike Sullivan said.
