'Pack a poncho': Gusty winds and short storms for south-east corner

South-east and central Queensland will see windy weather today, with possible short, sharp showers, before clearing on Tuesday. It is expected to be mostly clear in northern and western parts of the state today, with slightly warmer temperatures. What's next? More cloud and isolated showers could be in store on Wednesday west of the range, before clearing on Thursday. The state's south-east corner is in for strong winds and a possible "short burst" of rain this afternoon, as several regions enjoy their Royal Queensland Show public holiday. Harry Clark, senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology, said the "dynamic" day of weather was due to a vigorous trough moving across south-east and central Queensland. "That means fairly cloudy … and it'll be one line of showers and thunderstorms that comes through," he said. "I'd probably pack a poncho if I was going to the Ekka." Any rainfall associated with the storms is expected to be short and heavy, with "meagre" totals likely not exceeding 10mm, accompanied by strong winds. "They could impact Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, all the way up to around Gympie during the afternoon … Not expecting them to be severe, but certainly a bit gusty." A marine wind warning is in place for Moreton Bay, Sunshine and Gold Coast waters today. While some local government areas are enjoying an Ekka Show Day today, Brisbane city will observe its public holiday on Wednesday. The capital will see maximum temperatures hovering around the mid-20s this week, with minimums dropping to 9-11 degrees. 'Dynamic' week of weather Through north and western Queensland, conditions are expected to be relatively clear on Monday, with temperatures around two to five degrees above average for this time of year. "We will have minimum temperatures in the mid to high teens for places such as Mackay all the way up to Cairns and even inland," Mr Grant said. "Some of the cooler spots like Clermont, which are normally down in the single digits at this time of year, will be at a minimum of around 11 degrees [today]." Many northern cities could expect maximum temperatures in the mid to late 20s. But Tuesday should see a dip in temperatures. "Behind all this weather that we're expecting on Monday, we will have clear skies, relatively dry air in place across southern and central Queensland," Mr Grant said. Injune could drop to -1 degrees on Tuesday morning, with Stanthorpe getting down to 2- or 3-degree minimums. Another weak trough is expected to move across southern parts of the state on Wednesday, meaning a return to more cloud and isolated or scattered showers west of the range, before clearing again on Thursday. "It's a bit of a parade of these troughs coming through from the west over the next few days … A little bit of weather associated with each one, but some cold and clear days in between them," Mr Grant said.
