Commanders star Tunsil to have triceps surgery

Washington Commanders star left tackle Laremy Tunsil will undergo surgery to repair a torn triceps and is expected to miss significant time. Coach Dan Quinn did not disclose how long Tunsil will be sidelined but said the Commanders hope the five-time Pro Bowler will return this season. "It's always tough to talk about a player missing time, especially a great player like LT," Quinn said Monday. "Not only is he an unbelievable player, but he is an absolutely fantastic teammate. He'll be missed, and we certainly cant wait to get him back." Tunsil's injury is a crucial blow to the Commanders' offense, costing them a player considered one of the best at his position. The recovery time for such an injury is typically at least four months and as long as six or seven. Quinn confirmed that Brandon Coleman will be Washington's starting left tackle during Tunsil's absence. Tunsil suffered the injury in Saturday's practice in a one-on-one pass rush drill. He immediately bent over in apparent pain and held his right side before heading to the medical tent. Washington had signed Tunsil to a two-year extension in the offseason, giving him $61.5 million in total guarantees. He became the first offensive lineman to receive a contract that averaged $30 million per season. Tunsil, 32, has long been considered one of the NFL's top tackles. He was the only Commander named in the top 10 heading into the 2026 season in ESPN's recent survey of coaches and executives. Coleman started 12 games at left tackle as a rookie in 2024 and three more last year when Tunsil was injured. He had been competing with Chris Paul at left guard this year. "[Coleman] has played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know he's ready for it," Quinn said. "He's put in an excellent offseason, and the team's very confident in him."
