This marks an increase of £32.56 per child and comes at a time when many families are still grappling with higher costs for food and household bills. It comes as new school uniform rules are set to come into force from September 2026, which the Government says will help parents save money. Most primary schools in England will only be able to ask parents to buy a maximum of three branded uniform items per child, while secondary and middle schools can require up to four items if one of them is a tie. But a survey by Money Wellness of parents with school-age children found 48% had no idea the new rules were coming, while only a quarter (24%) said they were fully aware of the changes. Parents also remain divided over whether the new rules will make much difference. Around three in five (61%) think limiting branded items will save them money, but 30% don't expect to see any saving at all. How to save money on school uniform You could get up to £200 toward school uniform costs if you're on a low income, claiming benefits or receiving free school meals. School uniform grants are provided by all councils in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and some in England. It isn’t a statutory requirement in England, which means councils don’t have to offer the support. The exact eligibility criteria also varies between councils. Some charities also offer grants to help cover the costs of school uniform - although again, you'll normally need to be on a low income or claim benefits. "Many schools offer second-hand uniform sales, hardship support or can suggest lower-cost alternatives. If you’re struggling with several household bills, getting free debt advice early can make a real difference.”
