Tensions flared in the Norfolk market town when people attempted to storm homes linked to asylum seekers, and police officers were assaulted in three nights of unrest. Norfolk Police stated that officers were “subjected to significant aggression” in Thetford last Wednesday, which included officers being hit with a rock, bitten, and spat at. The force confirmed on Monday that two further arrests have been made “in connection with violent disorder seen in Thetford on Wednesday”. Norfolk Police said a teenage boy was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, adding that he was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning before being released on bail until 4 October. A man in his 20s was also arrested on Sunday on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a class B drug and possession of a class A drug. He was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains, police said. Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall said: “Our officers continue to review footage from previous disorder in Thetford as part of ongoing efforts to identify those responsible for committing offences. “We will be exploring all investigative opportunities available to us, and as this work progresses, people should expect further arrests. “We will maintain an increased visible policing presence in the days ahead, and we hope the peaceful scenes witnessed over the last two nights will continue. “I would like to thank the vast majority of the public who have helped to maintain calm and order in the town. “Their support and co-operation have been greatly appreciated as we continue to work to keep our communities safe.” Norfolk Police said increased policing powers will continue to be in place in Thetford until 4pm on Tuesday, including Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. Thomas Brown, 36, of Durham Way, Thetford, pleaded guilty on Monday at Norwich Magistrates’ Court to possession of a class B drug, namely cannabis, driving without insurance and failing to provide a breath test. Brown was issued with 10 penalty points on his licence and fined £60.
