US music guru Rick Beato impressed by 13-year-old Sydney singer's debut single His musical analysis videos have attracted billions of views on YouTube. Now influential US musician and producer Rick Beato has heaped praise on the debut single by 13-year-old Sydney performer Niko Karolia. Beato has more than 5.7 million subscribers and 2.06 billion views on his YouTube channel, where he breaks down songs and interviews legendary musicians. His large and growing audience has helped him land interviews with some of the biggest names in music, like Queen's Brian May, Sting, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and recently Billy Joel. Beato will be in Australia in October for a series of live shows, with his Sydney date upgraded to a bigger venue to meet demand. The shows will include a live version of his popular What Makes This Song Great? segment, in which he takes a deep dive into the songwriting, production and musical techniques behind well-known songs. Songs analysed on his channel include Elton John's Tiny Dancer, Coldplay's The Scientist, Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way and Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Breaking down Sana During an interview with Hamish Macdonald on 702 ABC Sydney Mornings, Beato was asked to analyse Sana, the debut single from Karolia, who recently made her first-ever radio appearance on the program. "I mean, it's really putting you on the spot, but can you dissect that for us?" Macdonald asked. Beato was impressed by the soulful track, highlighting the strength of Karolia's songwriting. "Very strong melody that has a natural 'da da, da da,'" he said, humming a musical phrase to conclude his sentence. "It has a natural resolution to it, like within it. "Take away the chords, take away the arrangement around it, the melody is strong enough on its own to be sung with no accompaniment, which is really what you want to have. "As soon as I start listening to a melody like that, those are the things I listen for." Beato also identified a songwriting technique used in the song, that is employed in nursery rhymes such as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It is known as antecedent and consequent, where one phrase asks a musical question, and the next answers it. "Strong melodies will have those things," Beato said. "And in the sections I just listened to, they have melodies that are written like that, that are very strong." 'I just want to be a global pop star' Karolia told 702 ABC Sydney Mornings she wants to take on the world. "I just want to be a global pop star that people can resonate with," she said. "At the start of last year, this idea popped into my head that I wanted to start releasing music." The 13-year-old was joined by her father, Imz Karolia, during the interview. He was initially hesitant about his daughter launching a music career, but changed his mind when he saw the effort she was putting in. "There were arguments," she said. "I was just trying to prove to him that I can release music, and I am ready to release music." Mr Karolia said his daughter's musical and performing talent had been apparent from an early age. "Oh yeah, man. From the time she was a baby," he said. "I've got videos of her dancing and singing and playing around when she was like six months old." He said they enrolled her in performing arts programs when she was about four years old. "It's my job as a father to really understand what natural talent my kids have and cultivate that for them, open the right doors for them," he said. Karolia writes her own songs, collaborating with several people, including fellow performers Tanisha and Jess Jade, and her cousin Jake Sta-Maria and her father.
