Brother of alleged Alan Jones victim only found out after arrest, court told

In short: A Sydney court has heard evidence from the brother of a man accusing broadcaster Alan Jones of indecent assault. The brother of Complainant J says he only found out about the alleged assault after Mr Jones was arrested. The court also heard Mr Jones offered to help the Complainant J's brother with an engagement ring. The brother of a man accusing Alan Jones of indecent assault has told the court he never saw the radio host act inappropriately towards his brother, and was only told of the allegations after Mr Jones's arrest. Complainant J, a former youth athlete who has alleged Mr Jones kissed and touched him indecently when he was 17 or 18, has finished giving evidence in Mr Jones's criminal trial in the New South Wales Local Court. Mr Jones's lawyers have accused Complainant J of "concocting" his evidence based on other media reports. The 85-year-old has pleaded not guilty to 20 counts of assault with act of indecency and two counts of sexual touching relating to six alleged victims between 2003 and 2020. Complainant J's brother has been called as a witness, and told the court on Tuesday he recalls first meeting Mr Jones in 2003 through his brother, because Mr Jones was interested in his emerging sporting career. He recalled seeing news of Mr Jones arrest in the media and gave evidence that Complainant J asked to meet him at a fast-food restaurant shortly after. "He said to me, in relation to the defendant, 'This is the hardest thing I've ever had to tell you.' "'You've probably seen the news about the defendant. "'I'm one of the people who've come forward,'" the witness said Complainant J told him. The witness said he asked his brother at the restaurant what Mr Jones had done to him. He said his brother did not give too much detail about the alleged offending, but told him, "he didn't try to f*** me or anything like that". "He would try … he would grab me on the c***, he'd kiss me," the witness said his brother told him. He said he asked Complainant J on that day why he did not say anything at the time, and that Complainant J told him he did not want Mr Jones's money and support to stop. The witness told the court he visited the broadcaster's studios and his Macquarie Street apartment on different occasions in 2003, around the time Complainant J has alleged the offending began. Brother did not see Jones act inappropriately Crown prosecutor Georgina Wright SC asked the witness, "Did you ever see the defendant act inappropriately towards your brother?" "I didn't," he replied. Complainant J's brother told the court he recalled his brother getting a mobile phone and a car from Mr Jones, as well as weekly payments to help with his training. He said he visited Mr Jones's Fitzroy Falls farmstay on one occasion, which the court has heard was on a different visit to the one where Complainant J alleges he was assaulted. Mr Jones offered to help the Complainant J's brother with an engagement ring when he talked about plans to propose to his now wife, the court heard. It is alleged the talkback host then gifted Complainant J's brother a Villeroy and Bosch dinner set for a wedding present. Complainant J has previously told the court he felt "scared" of Mr Jones at the time of the alleged offending and has admitted not wanting his weekly payments from Mr Jones to stop.
