People told 'soak feet in cold water' for better sleep during heatwave The quick tip could help people to get a good night's rest during the hot weather August is proving to be yet another hot, dry month across the UK. For people who struggle to sleep in the heat, Which? might just have the answer. The team's consumer experts have shared five tips to help people get better rest. In a post shared on TikTok, @Whichuk wrote: "Sleep rough with the heat last night? Try these tips tonight. You can thank us later." In the video, the experts shared several ideas to help the public. Some involved avoiding activities that raise your body temperature, such as eating heavy or spicy meals, while others focused on methods that help you cool down. For instance, Which? recommended taking a cool shower or soaking your feet in cold water before bed. Immersing your feet in cool water can lower your body temperature and help you feel more refreshed. Alternatively, you could put a pair of socks in the fridge and then wear them before bed, as the British Red Cross points out. In the video, other tips shared by Which? included placing ice in front of your fan and wearing lightweight pyjamas. The full list said: "1. Take a cool shower or soak your feet in cold water before bed. "2. Wear lightweight pyjamas made from natural fibres. 3. Got a fan? Place a bowl of ice in front of it. 4. Don't exercise just before bed. 5. Avoid hot, heavy, or spicy meals." Elsewhere, on Facebook, Which? asked social media users to share their own recommendations, and lots of people replied with their own tried-and-tested ideas. In the post, Which? said: "When it's too hot to sleep, what's the one trick you swear by?" Commenting under the post, a viewer shared: "Run your wrists under cold water until you start to cool down. This is a well known way to rapidly reduce your core temperature." Another comment said: "I have a spray bottle with water in by the bed, spray the bed and often myself! Tip from Dr Hilary years ago and have done it ever since!" Someone else wrote: "When I was suffering from cluster migraines, up to 23 times a month, I took a cold box with 8 large ice packs to put beside the bed. I would put them inside a pillow case one at a time and change them when they defrosted." A different suggestion said: "Instead of pointing her fan into the room, our daughter points it out of her open window, sounds mad, but the fan pulls all of the hot stale air out of the room at night, replacing it with fresher air and her room always feels cool now. Unusual, but works a treat!"
