Actress Lucy Davis, best known for her role as Dawn Tinsley on the UK version of The Office, has announced she has "incurable" stage 4 breast cancer. In a post on Instagram, Davis revealed she had been diagnosed one-and-a-half years ago and the cancer had metastasised to her bones including her spine, right hip and ribs. "The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo," Davis said. "The initial lump that I felt, wasn't a 'lump' as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn't bother getting it checked. "So I guess I'm saying don't ignore anything — get everything checked out." According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, after prostate cancer, with more than 20,000 people in Australia diagnosed every year. Stage 4 breast cancer, sometimes known as metastatic or advanced breast cancer, is when the disease has spread to other parts of the body. There is currently no cure; however, treatment is available to manage the illness and extend life. Davis, who has also starred in Shaun of the Dead, Wonder Woman and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, said she was now trying bring as much fun into the rest of her life as possible. "I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there's a lot I have learned from it, and I'm grateful for that," she said. In the post, Davis reads out the poem Ring the Bell, which is traditionally read after a patient completes chemotherapy or radiation treatment and rings a bell just once instead of the usual three times. She described the pain she is in and said she would sometimes need to use a wheelchair. "The thing that has been most vital to me is humour," Davis said. "I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible (which they're really good at), and most importantly of all to not treat me like a sick person. "There's nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you're unwell." She said she was not scared of what was next and she planned to continue her work for animal rights. Davis is a long-term vegan and a vocal animal activist. In 2007, she posed nude for PETA's campaign against the Guards Division's continued use of traditional bearskin caps. The Office co-star Ricky Gervais left a heart comment on Davis's post. "For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well," she wrote. "Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose."
