Neo-Nazi vandal attack at SA workers club is 'modern-day fascism'

The vandalism of an Adelaide workers club with Nazi symbols has been condemned by staff who say they are "appalled", "disgusted" and "absolutely horrified" by the incident. The Semaphore Workers Club says the site was broken into earlier this week by intruders who smashed a window and sprayed Nazi symbols onto two heritage pool tables. What's next? A century-old Adelaide workers club has condemned the neo-Nazi vandalism of its premises as an act of "modern-day fascism". Semaphore Workers Club staff said the venue had been broken into sometime earlier this week by intruders who daubed Nazi symbols on two of its pool tables. Dave Kirner, from the club's administration committee, told 891 ABC Adelaide the attack had "appalled" and "disgusted" staff. "A group of people broke into the building and smashed the heritage bay window and then ended up spraying swastikas onto the heritage 120-year-old billiard tables," he said. "We got calls about it today after tradies saw the broken windows. Representatives of the club came in and just saw and [were] just absolutely horrified." Mr Kirner said he suspected whoever was responsible was opposed to the club — which has strong ties to the trade union movement — and its support for a "lot of progressive issues". "All it's done is it's mobilised a whole lot of people in opposition to what basically appears to be modern-day fascism in South Australia," he said. "There's been a lot of activities by these types of groups right throughout Australia and it normally involves aggressive violent approaches. "We're strongly opposed to that and strongly opposed to the sort of messages they put out which are disgraceful [and] racist." SA Police confirmed it was investigating a break-in "at a premises at Esplanade, Semaphore" which occurred between 4:30pm on Monday and 3pm on Tuesday. "It is believed entry was gained after a window was smashed," police said in a statement. "Damage was caused within the premises and items including alcohol were stolen."
