India Student Protests Disrupt Parliament, Put Modi on Defensive
India’s monsoon session of Parliament was dominated by opposition disruptions as lawmakers demanded Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation over police action against widespread student protests, adding to pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Both houses of Parliament witnessed acrimonious scenes over the three-week session with daily adjournments as the opposition and ruling party lawmakers traded accusations. Through Wednesday, India’s lower house, the Lok Sabha, functioned for just 16% of its scheduled time, compared with 31% for the upper house, the Rajya Sabha, according to think tank PRS Legislative Research. Parliament is holding its final sitting of the monsoon session on Thursday.
