A one-year-old girl has been killed and a teenager is still missing after a hippo attack.
The incident took place on Tuesday at Mikinduni Village in Kenya as a canoe carrying 18 farmers and children capsized in the Tana River. This happened as a result of a hippopotamus attacking the passengers, police said.
The other 16 people were rescued, but the one-year-old girl drowned and the other child, who is a Form Three student and likely 16-17 years old, is still missing. The group are understood to have been crossing the river towards the Ijara direction.
The child's body was taken to the Hola County Referral Hospital after it was recovered and will undergo a post-mortem examination. The other suspected victim is a student at Chanani Secondary School.
Efforts to locate them are still ongoing. The Star reports hippo attacks are common in the area, with residents calling for action.
