Trains to busy UK airport stopped for 9 days - 'leave extra time' The Metro to the regional airport will close for nine days while repairs are carried out on the tracks, stations and cabling - this comes after a revamp to the airport A busy UK airport has told travellers to block out extra time if heading to the hub this weekend. The Metro at Newcastle Airport will close for nine days and no trains will run between the airport and South Gosforth while repairs are carried out on the tracks, stations and cabling. The closure will be in place from 5am on Saturday, August 15 to 11.59pm on Sunday, August 23. Outside of the closure, trains from the airport run from approximately 5.30am (Sundays 6.20am) to Midnight daily. Replacement bus services will be in place over the period. Travellers are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travelling. "Your journey will take longer, so please plan ahead and leave extra time for travelling," said Travel North East states on its website. Trains will run elsewhere on the system, but company warned revised timetables may be in place. The works to the railway come after Newcastle Airport recently completed a major upgrade as part of larger project to grow the airport from eight million passengers by 2035 and nine million by 2040. This including a refurbished the departures area with 450 new seats. The Mirror reported earlier this week that two West Yorkshire train stations will close for weeks to allow for major upgrades. The Huddersfield and Slaithwaite train stations will close for two weeks from mid-September. Major projects will be carried out between September 19 and October 4 - including the completion of the new £70million Huddersfield train station.
