Kate Middleton’s 'not always obvious' true colours shown in defiant Prince William remark A royal author has spoken about what Kate Middleton's dynamic with her husband Prince William is like behind closed doors, as discussion about her future as Queen grows An author and royal correspondent has spoken about a story that shows another side to Kate Middleton from the early days of her relationship with Prince William. Kate and William, who got married in 2011, first met at St Andrews University where their friendship, and then relationship, blossomed. One of the most interesting and famous moments was Kate’s appearance during a student fashion show, at which William was also in attendance. Whilst that has gone down in history, even appearing in an episode of Netflix’s The Crown, it was a different moment altogether that caught the attention of royal author and correspondent Simon Vigar. Appearing on The Talking Royals podcast, Simon, one of the UK’s longest serving royal correspondents for Channel 5, spoke to host Charlene White about his new book titled 'The Four Wives of Windsor: The Inside Story of the Power Behind the Crown'. During the interview, Charlene asked Simon about how he felt Kate had developed during her time in the Royal Family, at which point he started talking about that famous fashion show. He recalled: “One of my favourite stories from early on, there’s the famous fashion show at university with William saying, ‘Wow Fergus, Kate’s hot’, which is the famous one. “But the less famous one, of course she was one of the few people not chasing William at university which made her all the more attractive, and when they finally did get together, people would say to her, ‘Well, you’re lucky to have him’ and of course her response was, ‘Well, he’s lucky to have me’. “And there’s a confidence there that isn’t always obvious. You know, she didn’t, she found the early stages difficult in her royal career. She obviously didn’t have the training that Meghan [Markle] had in terms of media and just excepting it.” Simon’s comments about Kate came as further discussion continues about what sort of Queen she might be when William takes over from his father King Charles as monarch. Speaking to the Mirror about this very matter earlier this year, fellow royal author Katie Nicholl said Kate was ready for the big role, whenever it occurs. She said: “I asked someone who knows Kate and William very well whether she is ready for the next step up to Queen, and the response was a categoric ‘yes’. “Of course, she and William want Charles to be on the throne for many more years to come but, if that moment comes sooner than hoped for, they are absolutely ready and more than equipped for the roles that lie ahead of them. They've had plenty of exposure and have been well prepared." What’s more, others, such as former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, spoke of how great it was see William and Kate embrace their very gilded, but interesting, existence. She told OK!: "They are bringing a freshness, a youthful vigour to royal engagements: Catherine giggling over making William a cup of coffee when she knows he doesn’t drink it. “William taking pasty orders from an unsuspecting phone caller or jumping on the back of Greg James’ bike on his charity ride. "They positively bounce off one another on joint engagements, and it’s great to see them embrace this strange existence they’ve been landed with. It’s a job that goes on for life, so it’s important they find a way to make it enjoyable, as well as worthwhile.”
