Man dies after confrontation with police at Melbourne train station

Man dies in police custody at Clayton railway station after armed confrontation Police are investigating the circumstances around the death of a 37-year-old man, who died shortly after being arrested at a train station in Melbourne's south-east. Local police and Protective Service Officers were called after reports of a highly agitated man at Clayton railway station about 7:10pm on Sunday, and arrived to find the man armed with a knife. Police say the man was pacing the concourse before moving onto the tracks near the platform. The area was cordoned off, and trains were halted, as officers attempted to negotiate with the man. Police said the man advanced towards officers with the knife. Officers attempted to use non-lethal tactical tools to detain the man before a Critical Incident Response Team arrived to negotiate with the man. The man was taken into custody and became unresponsive shortly afterwards. Authorities say the man was provided immediate medical care by ambulance paramedics but couldn't be revived. Detectives from the Homicide Squad will now investigate the incident under the oversight of Professional Standards Command. Services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines remain suspended following the death, with buses replacing trains between Oakleigh and Westall.
