Youngsters seen tombstoning from dangerous 65ft cliff known as 'Dead Man's Cove' where dad plunged to death Locals said they had seen tombstoning at Plymouth Hoe but stressed this time it "seemed extra dangerous" given the rocks below were clearly visible and it was not even high tide A queue of youngsters have been filmed jumping and tombstoning from a dangerous cliff where several people have previously been injured and one has died. They were seen running towards the edge before jumping clear of the jagged wall and plummeting into the water. Tombstoning is a dangerous jump or straight dive where the person remains vertical - in a tombstone like pose - from height. The site, known as 'Dead Man's Cove' in Plymouth, has been a popular location for adrenaline junkies for many years with youngsters often queuing to jump from the 65ft cliff. Several have been injured at the site and in October 2016 dad-of-three Vincent Wagstaff, 39, died from multiple injuries after misjudging his leap. Others have been badly injured including teenager Ben Thompson who was left paralysed in 2010. One onlooker James Preston, 40, of Plymouth, Devon, said: "I have seen tombstoning at this location before, but this time seemed extra dangerous given it was not even high tide and the rocks below were clearly visible. "I stood there with other onlookers and we all cringed whilst the jumps were performed. This really shouldn't be allowed to happen in my opinion. It wouldn't have taken much for there to have been an extremely serious injury. Thankfully this was not the case but it feels like it is simply a matter of time if this going to happen again. "It was a beautiful sunny evening at the Plymouth Hoe but this certainly bought a nervy energy to the area. I am amazed that more measures have not been put into place to stop youths from doing this." The coastguard said previously: "It is infuriating because we know the consequences but they just say 'you're spoiling our fun'. Go to a proper diving thing if you want to dive off something into the water but going off here is absolutely ridiculous. "As long as people queue up and watch them or clap them - I've seen people clapping them - they'll continue to do it, just showing off to the girls, you know. We tell them if you saw the people that were in wheelchairs or crippled for life doing this from here, but they just say 'you're spoiling our fun.'" The Mirror has launched our 'Save Lives for Sam" campaign to stop the "catastrophic" deaths of 33 children who drown in England every year - "the equivalent of a classroom of children lost." In the year 2024 to 2025, 31 children died from drowning so the UK has already seen almost half of the amount killed the year before - in just one week. It is feared many more could die before the summer holidays end, unless something is done now. Bereaved families, The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Lee Pitcher MP, the Black Swimming Association (BSA), The National Water Safety Forum, the RNLI, Swim England and The Swimming Alliance, have all joined forces with the Mirror. Olympic legends Becky Adlington and Tom Dean have also backed our ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign - alongside elite swimmer Michael Gunning.
