These striking weather maps show large swathes of the UK are to see heavy rain this week.
The downpours put an abrupt end to the humidity amid the latest heatwave, during which temperatures exceeded 38C. The sweltering weather, though, led to a drought and grasslands across the UK have been left parched.
Although hosepipe bans remain in force across parts of the country, welcome relief is on its way, as the latest weather charts from WXCharts and the Met Office indicate that rain will sweep eastwards in the coming days. Temperatures will be considerably lower than those experienced over recent weeks too, with 18C or 19C expected on Wednesday. That is a huge drop the 38C high, recorded in Kew, southwest London, on Thursday - the hottest day of the year so far.
The heaviest of the rain is anticipated on Thursday, forecasters understand. Parts of the Midlands and the East of the England will see downpours, which will be thundery at times too.
As the Express reports, the Met Office says conditions will now be "increasingly unsettled" most likely until the end of the month. Its short-term forecast reads: "Conditions look like turning increasingly unsettled through next week, as low pressure gradually becomes dominant, squeezing the ridge off to the northeast and southwest," the Met Office's current forecast for this weekend and the following days reads.
"Most places are likely to see some rain or showers, which may be heavy with a risk of thunder at times. It may become breezy if not windy at times, too. Temperatures are likely to be near or a little below normal overall, with some chilly nights at first, but brief warm, humid spells are possible at times, especially in the south."
The Met Office has also taken to social media to alert Brits of incoming rain. In an Instagram post, the weather service shared a map of the UK depicting rain sweeping across the country.
The post reads: "It's a changeable week ahead with rain in the forecast but how much rain will your local area experience this week?
"Many places that have largely missed out on rain recently are likely to see some wet weather this week. Expect outbreaks of rain, with a risk of thunder and some intense downpours mixed in."
