Key Points

There is something rather revealing about Queen Camilla’s extraordinary confession that, when King Charles was diagnosed with cancer, she was "just longing to let it out". There is something rather revealing about Queen Camilla’s extraordinary confession that, when King Charles was diagnosed with cancer, she was "just longing to let it out". Behind all the usual business of managing royal engagements, the pomp, ceremony and various constitutional importance, we are reminded of the turmoil of a loving wife, who was, in that moment, terrified for her husband. While the world knew nothing of the King’s shocking diagnosis, Camilla was the one who had to keep calm and carry on as if everything was perfectly normal. The Queen's role during the King’s cancer battle changed overnight. In this candid interview with Dame Laura Lee from the cancer charity Maggie’s, Camilla’s stark reality of being plunged into being a carer, a support and confidant like never before, has emerged when she has never before revealed her own private struggle. When she walked into Maggie’s at the Royal Free Hospital in January 2024, Charles had already been diagnosed, but had not yet announced it to the world. During that visit, Camilla stood among and spoke to cancer patients and relatives, listening to their stories and offering comfort, like she had done many times before. Yet, in that moment she reveals how she suddenly had a deep understanding of exactly the sort of devastating news that had brought so many of them through the doors. "I almost said something", she has now admitted. Of course she could not, for this was not something she could simply unburden herself with, this was not only her husband, but the head of state in a time of personal crisis. Charles was facing his diagnosis at almost exactly the same time that the Princess of Wales was diagnosed with cancer herself. The princess also stepped away from public duties to concentrate on her treatment and recovery, while her husband Prince William was understandably absent from the frontline of royal life as he supported his wife and cared for their three young children. Suddenly, Camilla was thrust further into the spotlight and the central figure representing the monarchy at such an unprecedented time. Not only did Camilla have to support the King privately, while also reassuring the public through her continued presence, despite Charles’s determination to get back to work as soon as possible, we can not ignore what a frightening time this would have been for the Queen and the rest of the family. It is telling that the Queen would use the 30th anniversary of a charity that has meant so much to her in the past, to deliver such an honest statement about her recollections and fears of that time. Charles’s cancer diagnosis became a story about his resilience and his decision to be open about his illness. The Princess of Wales’ diagnosis became a story about courage and recovery and what is needed along such a journey. During this time and throughout, never has there been any statement about the Queen’s own turmoil or her sacrifice, nor has she ever made herself the focus despite being the one steadying the ship. It is without question that her contribution deserves a far greater recognition than has been noted.
