NT MLA Yiŋiya Guyula resigns labelling CLP government 'dehumanising, oppressing'
Member of the NT Legislative Assembly Yiŋiya Guyula has resigned effective immediately citing in part the Country Liberal Party's introduction of legislation that is "dehumanising, oppressing and destroying" Aboriginal communities.
Mr Guyula was first elected in the seat of Nhulunbuy, now known as Mulka, as an independent in 2016.
In a statement Mr Guyula said the decision to step down had not been "easy" but felt that it was necessary, as he could no longer "sit opposite a government who are not willing to listen or form partnerships".
"I have been sent by my people to work with the government but their answer has always been, 'we know what is best for you', rather than working in partnership with us," his statement read.
"What I have discovered is that Aboriginal communities are the political football that gets passed around with no real intention of working with our people to bring positive change for our communities."
Mr Guyula's resignation will prompt a by-election in his seat, although details on when this will occur are yet to be announced.
