President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year.

Trump did not elaborate further about the trip. His remarks came as he was walking reporters around the White House grounds to highlight his new helipad.

“He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons,” Trump said, referring to Kim Jong Un’s arsenal. “Should have never allowed it to happen, they should never have allowed it – if I were president, I never would have allowed it.”

Trump recently announced that he was scaling back joint military exercises with South Korea, possibly over trade tensions. The exercises have long angered the North Korean dictator, who views it as a preparation for war.

“I get along with Kim Jong Un very well,” he said. “He’s going to be fine. As long as we have a smart president, he’s going to be fine.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Trump met with the North Korean leader in his first term and in 2019 took an historic step, literally, into North Korea with Kim Jung Un at his side. Trump has repeatedly broadcast his friendship with the dictator as a way to ensure the North Korean leader behaves in a way that’s favorable to America.

Kim Yo Jong, the leader’s younger sister, told North Korean state media on Wednesday that the country’s position toward the U.S. had not changed despite the scaled-back military exercises, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“The head of our state personally holds good memories and feelings toward Trump,” she said. “Nevertheless the U.S.’s hostile policy remains unchanged.”
