Thousands of survivors of rape and sexual abuse will continue to access 24/7 support through a free, confidential helpline thanks to new government funding.
The Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line, provided by Rape Crisis England & Wales, was awarded £8.7 million by the Ministry of Justice on Thursday to continue the service.
The helpline, which launched in 2022 and is free to use, offers confidential support to all victims and survivors of rape and sexual abuse aged 16 and over.
The helpline has supported more than 200,000 calls and 75,000 webchats since its launch.
Alex Davies-Jones, the Minister for Victims and Violence Against Women and Girls and International Justice, told The Independent that the service is “such a lifeline for so many survivors”.
“For many victim-survivors of rape or sexual abuse, talking to someone about what happened is a vital step on the road to recovery. And often, it can feel much easier to open up to someone you don’t know,” she said.
“I’m proud to say we’re bolstering their services with £8.7 million of funding for Rape Crisis England & Wales, which will help their dedicated 24/7 helpline team continue to be there for every victim who needs support, a listening ear or simply to be believed.
“And with the backing of this new funding, the service will be enhanced with the introduction of British Sign Language interpretation and dedicated support for survivors with different needs, helping to make sure even more victims can access the support they deserve.
“If you’ve been affected by one of these devastating crimes, please know you are not alone. The around-the-clock Support Line is there for you, whenever you feel ready to reach out.”
The new funding will help develop the service, including by introducing British Sign Language Interpretation and providing dedicated support for survivors with different needs.
Rape Crisis England & Wales CEO Ciara Bergman said: “Our partners, support line staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that whenever the time is right, no matter who they are or when it happened, someone will be there to listen, believe and support them."
The government will also commit £550 million over three years to support services to help victims and witnesses through the justice process.
