Reggaeton star Wisin launches University of Perreo to preserve the history of the genre

The Puerto Rican artist has announced a new institution dedicated to studying and preserving the history of reggaeton, a project that already has a website and a 15-day countdown. The Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Wisin, known as "El Sobreviviente", has announced the launch of the Universidad Del Perreo (UDP), an institution aimed at studying, preserving and promoting the historyand culture of this musical genre. The artist has unveiled the project "with great pride and commitment" after more than three decades in music. Wisin, whose real name is Juan Luis Morera, believes that the evolution of reggaeton and its international impactdeserve to be preserved and studiedbeyond the music industry itself. The initiative already has an official website, although full details of how the institution will operate have yet to be released. For now, the site features a 15-day countdown, suggesting that more news about the project will be revealed then. Wisin's aim is to assert reggaeton's cultural value and give it "the rigour and the respect it deserves". After more than 30 years in the business, the artist highlights the evolution of a genre that was born in the streets and went on to conquer the world. Reggaeton began to take shape in Puerto Rico in the late 1980s and, after an early period marked by controversy and censorship, it became an international phenomenon.
