Fears E.coli could be in four snacks sold in UK shops as urgent recall issued Summit Foods says it is taking 'precautionary action' over four of its products due to the possible presence of E.coli which can cause kidney failure and even death Batches of four wrap products have been taken off shop shelves over fears they could contain bacteria which can cause kidney failure and can be fatal. Summit Foods is recalling the Snacksters Chicken Fajita Wrap, Snacksters Hoi Sin Wrap, East Street Deli Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap and Target a Snack Chicken Fajita Wrap due to the possible presence of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC). The recall applies to all use-by dates up to and including September 5, 2026. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned people who have bought any of the affected wraps not to eat them and to dispose of them instead. STEC can cause severe diarrhoea and abdominal pain, the FSA said. In some cases it can cause haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal. People experiencing symptoms should stay away from work, school or nursery until they have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours to reduce the risk of passing it to others. Notices will be displayed in stores and websites selling the affected wraps. The Snacksters Chicken Fajita Wrap item was being sold at Iceland and Bestway Wholesale. An FSA statement said: "Symptoms caused by STEC can include severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain and occasionally haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal. "If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others." It added that, if someone has purchased the products, they should "not consume it". Instead, it says people should "dispose of the product and provide proof of purchase on [email protected], stating when and where it was purchased, for a refund". E. coli are bacteria found in many places, including in the environment, foods, water, and the intestines of people and animals. Most E. coli are harmless and are part of a healthy intestinal tract. E. coli help us digest food, produce vitamins, and protect us from harmful germs. But some E. coli, such as STEC, can make people very sick with children under five, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems among those most at risk.
