An Ohio doctor who reportedly once published a paper on “violent and homicidal” adolescents and what leads teens to kill was allegedly shot dead by her 18-year-old daughter’s boyfriend and his friend.
Tamela Dutcher, 55, was allegedly shot in the face by her daughter’s boyfriend, Christian Evans, and his roommate, Dajameous Payne, during an invasion at her Delaware County home on August 14, NBC 4 reported.
Her teenage daughter, Bryanna Dutcher, is charged alongside Evans, 20, and Payne, 21, in the murder. Bryanna Dutcher has not entered a plea.
Deputies with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office were called to the home just after midnight when Tamela Dutcher’s husband called 911 to report she had been shot.
While on the phone, he also heard a second shot and reported someone running out of the front door of the home. First responders were called to the home and rushed Tamela Dutcher to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Over two decades ago, Tamela Dutcher co-authored an article in the International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health titled “The violent and homicidal adolescent. Hearts darkened before time,” according to NBC4.
“The vast majority of youth arrested for homicide are males. Those few girls who kill tend to kill family members,” Dutcher reportedly wrote in the article, which was published six years before her daughter was born.
Authorities interviewed the daughter, who had been home at the time of the shooting. The teen said she heard gunshots but did not see anyone enter the home.
However, police noted in a probable cause affidavit: “It is believed that Bryanna repeatedly lied to law enforcement about her knowledge of the circumstances involving this incident, which delayed identifying leads and suspects,” according to the document, which was obtained by Oxygen.
During the investigation, the 18-year-old told authorities that she was quietly dating Evans because she didn’t want her “very racist” parents to know she was dating a black man.
She told police that if her parents found out about the relationship, they would have kicked her out of the house. However, she told police that Evans “was okay with her parents being racist.” She also denied that he was involved in the shooting.
Bryanna Dutcher told police that on the night of the shooting, she vented to Evans over the phone about a fight between her and her mother, and he allegedly replied, “If I were you, I would have killed her.”
Later that night, Evans and Payne stopped by the family’s home, but Bryanna Dutcher wasn’t allowed to leave because she didn’t complete her chores, according to Oxygen.
The teen said that she heard a gunshot about 15 minutes later.
Phone records later revealed deleted text messages between the teen and Evans, including one from him that allegedly read, “Once they both pass away” and “Also I believe you should also get a gun.”
The affidavit noted Bryanna Dutcher allegedly told Evans “Alr shes living room he’s basement where you’re here lmk.” He allegedly replied, “Were getting ready,” “Getting gloves” and “Take them both out at the same time.”
Evans and Payne were later identified as suspects after police spotted them dumping a bag into a dumpster outside of their apartment.
Bryanna Dutcher, Evans and Payne have all been charged with aggravated murder and are being held in Delaware County Jail.
Carlos Crawford, a defense attorney for Evans indicated he would file a written plea of not guilty by reason of insanity for his client and have the court evaluate his competency.
“[Evans] is suffering from mental decline there at the jail,” Crawford said, according to Richland Source. “He does have a significant history of mental health disorders.”
