Young man living in tent in Gaza launches £20,000 bid to study at UK university Yasser Mohammad Abu Hamed landed a place to study computer science at a UK university from a tent in Gaza but tuition and living costs stand in his way A young man landed a place at a UK university while living in a tent in Gaza, with "no stable electricity or reliable internet", but has launched a fundraiser to help him cover costs. Yasser Mohammad Abu Hamed said it is his dream to study at the University of Leicester and has been offered a place to study computer science over a four-year period. The only thing standing in the way of the 21-year-old's dreams are the tuition costs and living expenses. The young man said his life was "simple" before the war in Gaza but he has now lost his home, safety and stability. He said: "Three years ago, my life was simple. I studied, planned my goals, and believed that hard work would shape my tomorrow. Then the war came, and everything changed. "I didn’t just lose my home. I lost safety, stability, and every piece of normal life I once knew. Today, I live in a tent, a place no student should ever have to call 'home'. A tent that doesn't stop the cold and shakes with every wind. A tent with no stable electricity, no reliable internet, and no quiet corner to study." Despite living through the devastating war, the 21-year-old has not given up on his university dream, according to Leicestershire Live. He said: "Even in these conditions, I refused to give up. I studied under the dim light of a phone and memorised lessons through noise, fear, and uncertainty. Every night was a battle, but determination kept me going, and somehow I made it. "I was accepted into several UK universities, including the one that means the most to me, the University of Leicester. For me, this isn't just an academic opportunity. It is a chance to start again. A chance to rebuild my life from the ground up and finally step out of survival mode." Yasser said he needs around £20,000 to cover tuition and living expenses in the UK and has set up a fundraiser, which has raised over £8,500. He said: "I'm not asking for luxury. I’m asking for a chance to study and build a future. War took my home, my belongings, and my sense of safety, but it did not take my education. And I refuse to let it take my future."
