Trump announces 50 percent tariff increase on Canada for vehicles, steel after trade talks collapse

Trump, posting on Truth Social, said the tariffs will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

“Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!,” he stated.

Trump rolled out a 50 percent tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods last month that had a 30 day grace period as negotiations continued.

Trump’s comments come after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate against the U.S.’s trade stance.
