Brits in Spain issued 'stay indoors' warning as thunderstorms strike holiday hotspots Thunderstorms and big hailstones have caused chaos in a holiday hotspot in Spain as the country continues to be hit by strong winds and heavy downpours this month British holidaymakers in Spain have been struck by horrific weather as thunderstorms and hailstones cause chaos across the country. On Monday, a severe storm hit the Catalonia region of Spain, with Camp de Tarragona flooding as trees fell and public transport was halted. Local media reports state that the strong hail and winds caused streets and plaza's to flood including in Carrer Joan Baptista Plana, Imperial Tàrraco, Carrer Vidal i Barraquer, Carrer d'Apodaca, and Avinguda Prat de la Riba. Bus services were also cancelled due to the heavy downpours. Local fire services received 129 calls, 107 of which were in the Tarragona region, over just an hour and a half as branches of trees fell and electrical cables faced issues. Sonia Orts, the Councillor for Civil Protection and Mobility said: "Fortunately, there are no reports of personal injuries". Tarragona City Council are working to remove dangerous trees and have closed local parks due to the weather. Tourists and locals have been warned to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, according to local media. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has issued a six out of six violent weather alert warning, with the risk of hailstones larger than two centimetres in diameter. The strong hail caused many pigeons in the area to die as videos shared online show the animals laying still on the floor among the high levels of water. Before reaching Tarragona the storm also impacted several other areas in the northeast, with regions all across Spain experiencing wet and windy conditions. Local crops in several municipalities in Segrià such as Almenar, Corbins, Albatàrrec, and Lleida city have been impacted by hail. The stormy spells come after the Balearic Islands were blasted by hurricane-force winds overnight. In the early hours of Friday, winds peaked at 121 kilometres per hour. Tourists in Mallorca woke to scenes of scattered debris and flooded roads as the costal area became victim to the bad weather. Several British holiday hotspots were targeted by these strong winds and rain including Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
