Horror footage posted on social media shows multiple people being attacked by the furious half-tonne animals, with some of them seemingly impaled by the bulls' horns. The Huamantlada was back last weekend for its 72nd edition, with 21 bulls weighing more than 450kg (70.8st) released into the streets of Huamantla city centre. Within just 90 seconds of the dangerous event starting, the first person was injured. This continued throughout Saturday and concluded with two men losing their lives, making this year's Humantlada the first fatal one in eight years. Footage shared online shows attendees trying to distract the bulls with red capes following the attacks but to no avail, as the animals continued raging. Shouts for help from horrified onlookers could be heard as other attendees were seen trying to help those injured. The first confirmed casualty was a man from Huamantla, in central Mexico, called Juan Manuel Filomeno Herrera. He is understood to have died as a result of a head injury and serious chest injury, which included a punctured lung. Mr Herrera reportedly fell to the ground in the path of a bull, with the animal repeatedly attacking him. The second casualty has been named as Luis Xolocotzi Ramírez, who was 57 years old. After he was attacked, Mr Ramírez was taken to hospital with a skull fracture and injuries to his chest. As his injuries were so severe, he was transferred to a specialist hospital by air ambulance but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, died. Footage also shows a young woman being attacked but, despite visible injuries, she is seen walking to safety on her own. A video posted on X shows her being horned in the face and tossed up in the air during the festival in the state of Tlaxcala, which is around 100 miles east from Mexico City. The woman is reportedly a 24-year-old American originally from Texas but who lives in Mexico. She was still in hospital as of yesterday. The fatalities have drawn strong reaction on social media, with many criticising the event. Bruno Gonzalez, said: "At what point does tradition become thoughtlessness, violence and negligence? And when it becomes that, is it worth perpetuating it over time? May he rest in peace." Another user added: "I can't think of two more foolish things in this life than dying in the Huamantlada. I say that with all due respect to the deceased, may they rest in peace." Another said: "People's lives can change in a second. This young woman just proved it. A stupid outburst and she won't see herself in the mirror the same way anymore. When are they going to ban this barbarity?"
