Man tells court 'humanity intact' after alleged attack on woman and child

A 10-year-old child was allegedly punched by a stranger outside the police station on Spencer Street on Tuesday. The same man then allegedly repeatedly stabbed the boy's mother with a pair of scissors. Bystanders restrained a 27-year-old man until police arrived. The woman and her son were both taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jerry Sowood was charged with several offences including intentionally causing injury and conduct endangering life. The Sunshine West man fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link on Wednesday afternoon, appearing to describe details of the incident when the magistrate began asking about health issues that might affect his time in custody. "There's no need to hide it," he said. "At least they're both still breathing, so I kept my humanity intact." He appeared to refuse an offer of a nurse visit and, when asked if he took any regular medications, said: "I was in a mental state of mind." The court heard it was the man's first time in custody.
