In short:
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have arrived back in England with their two children.
The family flew on a private jet from California to Birmingham after six years living in the United States.
The family’s announcement earlier this month that they were returning to the UK came as a surprise.
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan arrived back in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, six years after they moved their lives to California amid simmering tensions within the royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex last week made a surprise announcement they would be relocating back to Britian with their children.
UK media reported a private jet landed at Birmingham International Airport around noon local time (9pm AEST) — a claim backed up by publicly available flight-tracking data.
It has been speculated the couple will live at a private residence in the picturesque Cotswolds region outside of London.
The couple's two children, seven-year-old Archie and Lilibet, five, have already been enrolled in a British school.
Harry and Meghan gave up their royal duties at the start of 2020 and moved to the exclusive seaside area of Montecito, near Santa Barbara, as relations with his family soured.
They pursued their own independent careers but never left the headlines as they did tell-all interviews with Oprah Winfrey, produced Netflix series and continued to take on the press in court over breaches of security.
In the last couple of years of Queen Elizabeth II's life, the couple made allegations against palace staff as being insensitive to Meghan and levelled allegations of racism at members of the royal family.
After losing his fight for government funded security protection last year, the Duke of Sussex told the BBC he could not see a world where he would feel safe returning to the UK with his family.
The prince's relationship with his father King Charles, who is living with cancer, is said to have improved in recent times, in particular after a visit last month.
The Duke visited the UK in July for his charity work with the Invictus Games and also brought the family across from their Portugal holiday home for a surprise visit, allowing the King to see his grandchildren for the first time in four years.
Prior to that, the last time the entire Sussex family was in the UK together was for the Queen's funeral in 2022.
But it's widely reported Harry is not on speaking terms with his brother and heir-to-the-throne, Prince William.
The announcement of their return came a day before a London court ruling meant Harry could be liable to pay millions of pounds to the publisher of the Daily Mail newspaper after a failed privacy lawsuit.
Meghan is reportedly in talks about a return to acting although neither her agent nor the speculated TV drama have commented.
