Ted Cruz has been forced to delete a tribute to the late country music superstar Dolly Parton after the account he quote-tweeted quickly changed its username to humiliate him. Responding to Parton’s sad passing this week, Cruz reposted a clip from the @lebatardshowfan account of her appearing on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from September 1979 in which she serenaded the host with a specially written song to thank him for supporting her. “Legend,” the senator wrote in praise of the performance, adding teardrop, heart and prayer emojis. However, as soon as his post went up, the account holder changed his username from simply “Mark” to “Ted Cruz’s tiny d***” so that it appeared live beneath his message, inviting ridicule. He also responded to the Republican in savage style, writing: “Thanks for the retweet, Ted. Remember in 2016 you told the RNC Convention to ‘vote your conscience’ and then ultimately gave up having any backbone and backed Trump who called your wife ugly? Fun times.” The post was up for at least 17 hours before Cruz noticed and deleted it. Many relished his latest social media embarrassment, with the anti-Trump Lincoln Project hailing it as “QT of the year, folks” and the Tucker Carlson Network declaring that “Mark” – who has since reverted to his original name – was likewise a legend. Brian Krassenstein accused Cruz of “self-trolling” while others said his post “may be the greatest Conservative Self-Own ever” and claimed he was “the kinda person who absolutely would have a separate account for his diminutive genitalia.” Another person called the epsiode “the second funniest thing to ever happen to Ted Cruz on Twitter,” likely alluding to the notorious moment from September 2017 when his official account liked a two-minute clip from a porn film tweeted out by “SexuallPosts,” a gaffe subsequently blamed on an unnamed staffer. Cory Chase, the adult actress who starred in the scene, later told The Daily Beast she was “not a fan” of Cruz and found it “very weird that someone like him would like something like that,” compounding matters. The senator is no stranger to public embarrassments, however. In fact, he is a politician whom commentators take a particular delight in mocking. “Mark” is by no means the first to subject Cruz to scorn over his loyal support for President Donald Trump – a man who labelled him “Lyin’ Ted,” alleged that his father was involved in the assassination of JFK and publicly insulted his wife Heidi when the two men were rivals for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. He has also been roasted for going on vacation to Cancun while his state was suffering a power and water crisis in February 2021, for spending more time on his podcast than governing and for being unable to answer elementary questions about Iran while lobbying for greater U.S. military aggression against the country. Most recently, he has been laughed at for warning against billionaire presidents who “steal and rob from those they govern” and attacked for spreading misinformation wrongly linking the Covid-19 vaccine to miscarriages.
