British tourist 'gang raped' in Zante hotel room as two men arrested Two Romanian men have been arrested following an allegation by a 38-year-old British woman in Zakynthos. A British tourist has alleged she was gang raped in a hotel room on the Greek island of Zakynthos. Two Romanian men, aged 19 and 28, have been arrested after the 38-year-old alleged she was sexually assaulted at a hotel in the Laganas area in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Local media outlet Imerazante reports that a video “substantiates what the British woman claims”, describing it as a “very serious case”. The two men have since been taken to the Prosecutor's Office of Zakynthos. Earlier this month, police in Zakynthos denied claims about the number of rape cases involving tourists after a hospital union accused authorities of lax law enforcement. Police said only three rape cases involving tourists had been reported over the previous three months. Michalis Giannakos, president of public healthcare workers’ union POEDIN, claimed hospital staff had dealt with eight rape cases over a three-week period, leading to an increased workload. He said: “It is abhorrent and humiliating what is happening to the women, with individuals taking advantage of the state of intoxication in which they may be.” Authorities on the island defended their response and insisted all required procedures had been followed. Mr Giannakos also claimed an Italian tourist had been raped weeks earlier and suffered injuries requiring specialist medical treatment. Police said in a statement: “During the period from May to August 6, three incidents have been reported to our competent service, for which all procedures provided for by law were immediately followed, in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office, forensic and health authorities, and two arrests have been made.” The statement added: “We are dedicated to investigating every report, protecting victims and reliably informing public opinion, solely based on official and confirmed data.” Mr Giannakos said tourists make up most of the roughly 200 people seeking treatment at Zakynthos hospital each day during the summer season. Eurostat figures show recorded sexual violence offences in Greece increased from 511 cases in 2010 to 1,250 in 2024.
