A body has been found in the search for a missing British tourist a day after police and firefighters started searching the eastern Pyrenees mountains for him.
The 28-year-old was last seen in the early hours of Sunday after leaving a hostel in Andorra. On Wednesday Andorran firefighters and police launched a search to find the man - who has not yet been named.
Local media reports he had left his backpack, travel documents and other belongings at the hostel in the town of Escaldes-Engordany – in the southeastern part of Andorra.
Just a day into the search a body was found in the Tristaina area. The Tristaina Lakes (Estanys de Tristaina) are a group of three high-mountain glacial lakes located in the Ordino parish of Andorra, near the French border.
A statement from Andorra Police shared on Facebook today reads: "Andorran firefighters located a body this Thursday at midday in the Tristaina area, as part of the active search for a 28-year-old British tourist that the Police—with the collaboration of the Rescue Service—had launched on Wednesday.
"From the moment the alert regarding his possible disappearance was raised, officers from the Public Security, Judicial Police and Criminal Investigation, and International Cooperation Office units launched an investigation. Supported by the fire service, they began searching urban areas while attempting to reconstruct the route the young man might have taken.
"On Thursday morning, once the Police obtained more precise information regarding his likely location in the Tristaina area, a search operation was activated there, involving firefighters using a helicopter and the Police using a drone. During the search, around noon, a member of the public alerted the Rescue Service after spotting what appeared to be a deceased person.
"The Police will now proceed to identify the body and verify whether it is the British tourist who had been the subject of the search since Wednesday."
