MTR Corp to deploy a world-first use of skidding method for Hung Shui Kiu station Station sections to be built beside the operating Tuen Ma line and skidded into position to shorten construction time, but network disruptions are expected Hong Kong’s rail operator will use a skidding method – the first worldwide for a heavy-rail project – to build Hung Shui Kiu station, helping to overcome time constraints and ensure completion by 2030. The MTR Corporation said on Friday that the station structures, each weighing about 10,000 tonnes, would be assembled from prefabricated components at worksites on either side of an operational viaduct. They would then be skidded into their designated positions alongside the operating Tuen Ma line. Hung Shui Kiu station, located between Tin Shui Wai and Siu Hong stations on the Tuen Ma line, will serve the future Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area in the Northern Metropolis. It will also be Hong Kong’s first station built on an operational railway viaduct. “This innovative construction method significantly reduces the need for works during non-traffic hours, greatly reduces construction risks and secures project progress,” said Carl Devlin, the corporation’s capital works director. He referred to the daily “golden two hours” during non-traffic hours, when the rail line is available for repairs, maintenance and other works.
