Two weather warnings have been issued, one covering southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the other covers all of England except the south-East. Both of the yellow warnings run from 11am today. The yellow alert for England warns 30-40 mm of rain and wind gusts of 35-45 mph with “probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes. This warning expires at midnight. Meanwhile the warning for Scotland and Northern Ireland expires at 9pm and sees widespread, heavy and thundery showers with 25-35 mm possible while “lightning and hail will be additional hazards,” the forecaster warned. Brits living in both warning areas have been told that there is a “good chance” driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Delays to trains are also possible as well as damage to buildings from lightning strikes. Likewise, both areas are likely to experience loss of power and other services and some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures, the Met Office warned.
