Times Square stabbing: 1 killed, 1 critically injured; suspect shot dead by NYPD

At least one person was killed and another critically injured after a woman allegedly stabbed two people in New York City's Times Square before she was fatally shot by police, authorities said. The stabbings occurred at around 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue on Monday, according to police. The suspect, described by authorities as apparently emotionally disturbed, fled north toward an NYPD substation, where officers confronted her. Police said the woman was armed with two large knives when officers encountered her. Bystander video showed several officers surrounding the woman, with at least one appearing to use a taser before she moved toward officers while brandishing the knives. Officers then opened fire. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to police sources. One of the stabbing victims, a woman, also died at a hospital, police said. The second victim suffered life-threatening injuries. Police officials stressed that the incident does not appear to be terror-related and that the suspect appeared to be emotionally disturbed. The shooting took place near an NYPD substation just outside One Times Square, one of New York City's most heavily policed and visited areas. Police cordoned off the area and closed part of Seventh Avenue as officers investigated the incident. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area.
