The “Galbot Stores”, operated by wheeled humanoid robots, opened two outdoor outlets in Hung Hom and Wan Chai and an indoor unit in Kai Tak on Tuesday, marking the city’s first fully automated retail roll-out. Shelves carry a mix of snacks and drinks, along with local souvenirs such as pineapple-bun and egg-waffle-themed merchandise, priced from about HK$10 to HK$139 (US$1.27 to US$17.73). Customers place orders on a screen in front of the robot, then pay by card, WeChat, Alipay, or China UnionPay, after which the robot retrieves and hands over the items. They are also free to strike up a casual chat with the robot shop manager, “Xiao Gai” – no purchase necessary. “Do not miss it – the big star who’s appeared on the Spring Festival Gala is working right here!” the robot manager greeted passers-by in Cantonese. Around 11am, several visitors stopped to photograph the store on Hung Hom’s new waterfront, though the heavy rain appeared to dampen their enthusiasm for lingering. Some showed interest but walked away after learning the store accepted neither cash nor Octopus cards.
